Rangers are still in the hunt for a new permanent manager after sacking Philippe Clement in late February.

Barry Ferguson has been in temporary charge in Glasgow but has endured mixed fortunes during his short reign, making his stay unlikely.

It appeared that Davide Ancelotti, son of Carlo, was nailed on to be given the Ibrox hotseat, with a significant offer made to land him already.

However, recent reports out of Scotland suggest otherwise after another bend in the ongoing saga.

Don Carlo pulling Rangers strings from abroad

After a host of names had been linked with the Rangers’ hotseat, it seemed that Ancelotti was set to be unveiled as their new boss.

MORE RANGERS STORIES

Several other high-profile names had been linked with the throne, including the second coming of former favourite Steven Gerrard.

With the Rangers hierarchy set to undergo their interview process for proposed candidates, Carlo has been accused of fiddling from abroad.

Writing for the Daily Record (14 May), Keith Jackson said: “Which is precisely why something feels a little bit strange about the rush to present Ancelotti’s arrival in Glasgow as a fait accompli, as it has been from Madrid to Milan over the last couple of days.

“It’s almost as if the great Godfather of the game has asked for a few favours to be called in and for his boy’s name to be given maximum exposure, perhaps in the belief that Rangers will be left to feel this is an offer they’d be mad to turn down.”

Ancelotti worth a punt for Rangers

Rangers have the opportunity to choose experience or a fresh approach when they decide on their next boss, after years of mediocrity.

The Italian would certainly fall into the latter category in terms of his managerial experience, but he has been by the side of one of the game’s finest.

Ancelotti has been his father’s assistant manager across Europe and at some of the world’s most famous clubs.

After spells at Bayern Munich, Napoli, Everton, and Real Madrid, the time feels right for the 35-year-old to take his first dip in management.

Clubs where Ancelotti has been assistant manager Period

Bayern Munich July 2016 – September 2017

Napoli July 2018 – December 2019

Everton December 2019 – June 2021

Real Madrid July 2021 – present

Davide Ancelotti’s record as assistant manager

This approach has worked before, just ask Gerrard; he was offered his first role in senior management by the Gers and produced a first league title in 10 years.

Yes, Ancelotti is only a spring chicken, but only he can boast the experiences he has had alongside his legendary father.

A new dawn is set to begin in Glasgow, and what better person than the son of one of the greatest managers in history?
