Wirtz meets with Liverpool as Reds rival Man City for transfer

Florian Wirtz and his representatives met with Liverpool to discuss a potential move to Anfield on Tuesday.

The Bayer Leverkusen midfielder was pictured in northern England, with widespread reports that Wirtz and his father had met with Manchester City.

However, it has now been revealed that talks were also held with Liverpool, who are ready to rival City and Bayern Munich for the 22-year-old.

German outlet BILD have confirmed the meeting, as the race to sign Wirtz heats up. The midfielder is regarded as one of Europe’s top talents, having evolved into one of the Bundesliga’s best at Leverkusen.

He was named Bundesliga Player of the Season in 2023/24, after helping Leverkusen to a maiden German title without losing a game. This season, Wirtz has 16 goals and 13 assists across the Bundesliga and Champions League.

Liverpool are expected to invest heavily this summer after winning the Premier League, while Manchester City have made Wirtz their number one midfield target. However, Bayern Munich remain confident of winning the race.

Though unconfirmed, Wirtz’s contract is reported to contain a release clause in the region of €125m (£105.4m). That figure would represent a club-record deal for either Liverpool or Manchester City.

Liverpool are also interested in signing Wirtz’s Leverkusen teammate, Jeremie Frimpong. The right-back, who has a release clause of €35m, is viewed as a potential replacement for Trent Alexander-Arnold. The Reds have held advanced talks over a deal to sign the Dutch international.
