West Ham have had a miserable season and will be glad to see the back of it.

The Hammers sacked Julen Lopetegui in January but Graham Potter has been unable to turn the situation around in East London.

The Irons are currently sat in 15th place in the Premier League and could have been in relegation danger if the three newly-promoted teams were not as bad as they are.

West Ham involved in relegation play-off idea

The London Stadium outfit have been namedropped as a contender for a relegation play-off as the idea was mooted by Peter Crouch.

A listener brought up the idea, and Crouch debated it with co-hosts Steve Sidwell and Chris Stark and the former Liverpool man was in favour.

Speaking on the Peter Crouch podcast (14 May), he said: “If you have a bad season, you are a West Ham, a Tottenham or a Manchester United, you know you are comfortable, there is three teams much worse than you.

“But, In a one-off game, that is where you could have the jeopardy and it would be unbelievable.”

Potter needs to impress next season

The concept and Crouch’s support for it are ludicrous, teams should be relegated on merit and the three newly-promoted outfits have been woeful and deserve to go back down.

However, the fact that the Hammers are even being put forward for an idea like that should be a major concern to Potter and owner David Sullivan, as they should be an established top-flight club, competing for the European places.

Premier League Played GD Points

15. West Ham 36 -17 40

16. Manchester United 36 -11 39

17. Tottenham 36 +4 38

The Hammers have had a dismal season.

The Irons need to strengthen significantly in the summer transfer window to ensure that they do not find themselves struggling towards the bottom again next campaign after another miserable period of investment.

If they are, they may go down, the likes of Leeds, Burnley and whoever comes up out of Sheffield United or Sunderland, may be better placed to survive than Southampton, Leicester and Ipswich and that would spell danger for the E20 club.

Iconic commentator Ian Darke believes that the victory over Manchester United will allow the former Chelsea boss to kick on after a grim start to his reign and that needs to be the case, otherwise, it could be a very scary time to support the Claret and Blue next season.

If Potter gets it wrong and then they are scrambling for a new manager halfway through the campaign, it could be a disaster.
