As Manchester City gear up for this weekend's FA Cup final, they have also had a busy day off the pitch ahead of the summer transfer window opening.

City travel to Wembley Stadium on Saturday to take on Crystal Palace in the FA Cup final as they look to end the season with some silverware.

But as they bid to compete in the Premier League and Champions League again next term they are set to be busy in the summer transfer market and that business has already started to take shape.

With that in mind, here is a look at the latest City headlines on Wednesday, May 14.

Wirtz boost

Manchester City remain in the hunt to sign Florian Wirtz after his parents flew to England for talks with the Blues. The Bayer Leverkusen star’s parents were in Manchester on Tuesday as they weigh up the best option for their son this summer.

Their trip to City will encourage Txiki Begiristain and Hugo Viana, who would like Wirtz to replace Kevin De Bruyne but had read reports recently that the player was set on Bayern Munich - either this summer or next. Pep Guardiola was not in Manchester for any meetings on Tuesday, although he will often phone potential signings to talk through how he sees them in the team.

The Bundesliga champions remain the biggest threat to City for Wirtz and Real Madrid - set to appoint Xabi Alonso as their coach - could also come into the mix, yet the talks in Manchester represent a major boost for the Blues following indications that the race was over. City will keep pushing hard to secure one of their priority targets for the summer.

City set to agree £25m deal

Manchester City are closing in on a deal that would see midfielder Maximo Perrone join Como permanently for over £25m (€30m). The 22-year-old has spent this season on loan with the Serie A side as they have impressed under manager Cesc Fabregas to sit comfortably in mid-table after promotion.

Perrone signed for City in January 2023 and came to Manchester straightaway, where he made his Premier League debut in a way away at Bournemouth. He then spent a season on loan in La Liga at Las Palmas before spending this year in Italy.

Como have been happy enough with Perrone's contributions to want to sign him on a permanent deal and a £25m deal is close to being agreed. That will see the Blues make around £17m profit on a player who made just one appearance for them as their approach of buying young South American talent continues to be a lucrative business for them.

City cup schedule exposes Pep priority

Manchester City's training ground has been quiet ahead of the FA Cup final with Crystal Palace. It isn't that the players are still smarting from dropping two points at relegated Southampton, they just haven't been there.

After a recovery session on Sunday, Pep Guardiola has given his squad two days off before they then regroup to prepare for what the manager will deem two finals in four days. Beating Palace at Wembley would be nice, but the priority is probably Bournemouth at home on Tuesday night.

City's slip at Southampton means they were leapfrogged by Newcastle on Sunday and can be overtaken by Chelsea and Villa before they play again. A top-five finish will still be in their hands when they kick off against Bournemouth, but they could be as low as sixth when they do so if results go against them.

Already more important than the FA Cup and the Premier League finish is how City start next season. Improvement is expected in the Premier League and Champions League yet the club's participation in the Club World Cup threatens to put them on the back foot and tired before they begin those campaigns.
