Newcastle United are understood to be open to offers for Sean Longstaff this summer.
Leeds United are reportedly readying a summer swoop for Newcastle United outcast Sean Longstaff.
Toon chiefs triggered a one-year extension in Longstaff’s deal to protect their academy asset. A mainstay at St James’ Park since breaking through the ranks in 2018, the North Shields native has made over 200 appearances for his boyhood club.
However, the emergence of Bruno Guimaraes, Sandro Tonali and Joelinton as Eddie Howe’s preferred trio has limited Longstaff’s game time. The Toon boss has also turned to youngster Lewis Miley from the bench ahead of the experienced midfielder.
Just eight Premier League starts this season has led many to suggest Longstaff’s days on Tyneside are numbered. As a homegrown talent, any sale would generate pure profit on the balance sheet.
Paul Mitchell already considered Sean Longstaff exit
NewcastleWorld understands sporting director Paul Mitchell shortlisted Longstaff for a possible exit earlier this year before ultimately offloading Miguel Almiron and Lloyd Kelly. PSR restrictions meant Newcastle needed to trade but Longstaff was kept as backup in the engine room.
The noises from St James’ Park suggest funds should be available - especially if the Magpies secure Champions League qualification. Selling an academy product would only boost those coffers going into an exciting summer.
Leeds United emerge as front-runners for Sean Longstaff
TEAMtalk claim Leeds are interested as they aim to bolster their ranks for the top flight. The Whites won the Championship and are understood to have a £100million war chest available.
Longstaff’s contract situation makes him an option for a cut-price deal and the player is chasing first-team football. At £10million, the move makes sense for all parties and the 27-year-old would leave with Newcastle’s blessing.
‘I don’t have to motivate him’ - Eddie Howe
Howe called on Longstaff to “be ready” to make an impact when summoned earlier this month. He told reporters: "I don't look at it that way. I don't have to motivate him. He should motivate himself - he is here representing the club he loves.
"He has to be ready to take his chance when it comes. Any train of thought that I have to - I can't do that for all 25 players. But Sean is motivated. He has been brilliant behind the scenes, he is training well and he's got undoubted qualities.
“He also has a contract for next year. The control is very much in his hands as to what he wants to do for his long-term future. And we are certainly delighted to have him."
