There has been little said by Leicester City, at least to supporters, about the future direction of the club now that relegation has been confirmed.
The Foxes' return to the Championship after just one season back in the top-flight was confirmed by defeat to Liverpool on April 20, prompting manager Ruud van Nistelrooy to urge the club to act quickly on deciding his future.
In fact, it took City chairman Aiyawatt ‘Top’ Srivaddhanaprabha another two weeks before publicly commenting on the club’s plight, saying in his programme notes for the home game against Southampton that “there are decisions to be made”.
Whether one of those involves the future of van Nistelrooy remains unclear, despite speculation about who might replace the Dutchman, even though his contract runs until the summer of 2027.
There have even been suggestions that a pay-off for van Nistelrooy could have a detrimental impact on the club’s attempts to stay on the right side of Premier League and EFL spending rules.
However, one name that has been a constant in talk about a possible replacement for van Nistelrooy has been current Sheffield Wednesday boss Danny Rohl.
The 36-year-old German has won admirers for his work at Hillsborough since arriving at the club in October 2023, guiding them to safety last season before securing a 12th-placed finish in the campaign that has just finished.
But if Rohl really is on Leicester’s wanted list, they may have to tear it up and start all over again amid claims he is a contender for a top job north of the border.
According to Sky Sports , Rohl could be in the frame to replace Philippe Clement as Rangers manager. Clement was axed earlier this year and replaced on a temporary basis by Ibrox hero Barry Ferguson.
That Rohl, who has previously had roles at Southampton, Bayern Munich and with the German national team, is leaving Wednesday this summer is in little doubt. He as much as confirmed it during an interview with Kicker last week.
He said: “I’ve made no secret of the fact that I’d like to work at the highest possible level with the best players in the near future.
"My situation in Sheffield is unofficially relatively clear. There’s a clear agreement with the owner about how I envision my future. Unfortunately, I can’t go into detail about that right now."
In addition to Leicester, both Southampton and RB Leipzig are said to be keen on Rohl - but the chance to win a title in Scotland may appeal to the young German as he plots his next step on the managerial ladder.
