Ruben Amorim has revealed why he has paid for 30 of his backroom staff to take their families to next week's Europa League final in Spain.

The Manchester United boss put his hand in his pocket after being told by the hierarchy that his coaches, physios and wider support team would have to pay for their own tickets for the final against Tottenham in Bilbao.

The United manager's generous gesture means key members of staff who were otherwise unable to take their families with them to the final will now be able to take up to two friends or family to the final.

Amorim said: “The situation is simple – you know we have a lot of things, people leaving, a lot of changes in the staff, and in this moment for our club, sometimes it's hard when to give, when to take and to respect the people in certain jobs.

“It's complicated for the club to start giving [tickets] to other members of staff, that situation was explained and in that moment my reaction was to help.

“I'm a good guy and it's not going to change my life. A final is different, but you can understand this season has been really difficult – the results and the staff [losing their jobs]."

Amorim added: "A final is different. This season has been really difficult on everyone - the results and also the change in the staff and you can feel it in our club.

"We are addressing that during the season, we are changing the way we play during the season, we have so many bad results in the Premier League.

"The environment is different at the moment but I guarantee you when we are preparing a game in the Europa League, the environment is a little bit different, then you can feel the excitement."
