The shocking amount of money the Glazers have earned during 20 years of Man United ownership

The Glazer family have become extremely unpopular figures around Old Trafford over the past 20 years.

This week marks 20 years of Glazer ownership at Manchester United and fans continue to protest against the US family.

United fans will protest at the Aston Villa clash – the final home game of the season – to voice their discontent at the ownership of the club.

The Glazers piled debt onto United through their takeover in 2005 and the club has been in a constant decline since Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement in 2013.

Glazers have earned a staggering amount of money through Man United

The debt at United has grown to over £730 million under the Glazers – and the club has paid over £750 million of interest on that debt over the past 20 years.

Meanwhile, the day-to-day running of the football club has been overlooked with terrible recruitment over the past decade and criticism aimed at United’s infrastructure – notably from legends such as Cristiano Ronaldo.

The Glazers stopped taking dividends in 2022 but they have still withdrawn £166 million from the football club without ever investing any of their own cash.

On top of that, the Glazer family cashed in on Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s minority takeover which was completed on Christmas Eve of 2023.

Altogether, The Athletic have calculated that the Glazers have made over £1.35 billion as a result of owning Manchester United.

Glazers are still majority shareholders at Manchester United

Despite handing over sporting control to Sir Jim Ratcliffe and Ineos, the Glazers continue to use United as a cash cow.

The US family retain a controlling 68% of voting rights at Old Trafford, despite hiding behind Ratcliffe and his team of decision-makers.

Ultimately, it means the Glazers could force Ratcliffe to sell his United shares if a bigger bid arrives, and that is not out of the question.

It has been predicted that there could be another United takeover saga if the Glazers receive a bid for their majority stake.

The US family have shown little interest in investing in United and fans continue to chase them out of Old Trafford.

Many of the on-pitch issues that have plagued United’s 2024/25 campaign are a direct result of the Glazer mismanagement.
