Manchester City's hopes of landing Bayer Leverkusen star Florian Wirtz have taken a hit after reports that another team has entered the race to sign the Germany international.

It currently remains to be unclear whether Wirtz will leave Leverkusen this summer. Xabi Alonso's imminent move to Real Madrid has placed down over his future at the club, but a transfer away from Germany is uncertain.

Bayern have been linked with the 22-year-old for some time and are expected to use their pull in Germany to sign Wirtz. Vincent Kompany's men are already close to bringing Jonathan Tah to the Allianz Arena on a free transfer. Meanwhile, Manchester City have been linked with a move for the midfielder to replace the attacking output of Kevin de Bruyne.

Here, MEN Sport takes a look at the latest on Wirtz...

What we know so far?

On Tuesday, MEN Sport understands Wirtz's parents flew to England to undergo talks with City over a possible move this summer. The Leverkusen ace has been identified as a possible replacement for Kevin De Bruyne but Txiki Begiristain faces competition from Bayern Munich.

City boss Pep Guardiola was not in Manchester for any meetings on Tuesday. The Spaniard often holds phone calls with potential incomings to talk through how they would fit into the team.

Liverpool bombshell

It has now been claimed that Liverpool have entered the race by making contact with the player's representatives.

The Premier League champions are said to have expressed an interest in bringing him to Anfield to bolster Arne Slot's attack, according to The Athletic.

What has Wirtz said?

Wirtz himself has given nothing away about his future in a recent interview. "I’m pretty lucky that I have so many excellent clubs right on my doorstep and that I can now play for one of the best clubs in Germany and Europe," he told Sports Illustrated.

"I have a lot of respect for the lads here in Leverkusen who come from South America or Africa, for example, and leave their families and surroundings behind for their careers.

"It definitely appeals to me to leave my comfort zone at some point and experience something new. I know football locker rooms well enough and I’m convinced that I would quickly settle in wherever I go.”
