Manchester United’s transfer plans could be transformed if they win the Europa League next week
Manchester United have not given up hope of signing Sporting Lisbon striker Viktor Gyokeres this summer, with the player remaining a target for the Red Devils - according to David Ornstein.
United’s summer plans will hinge on the result of next week’s Europa League final against Tottenham Hotspur. Winning the trophy and qualifying for the Champions League will bolster the Red Devils heading into the transfer market.
However, if Spurs are to triumph, then United will be reliant on player exits to help fund Amorim’s rebuild. They would still be able to finance one or two arrivals without sales but a move for Gyokeres would be unlikely without Champions League football.
David Ornstein reveals Man United retain Gyokeres interest
Arsenal appear to be the current frontrunners to sign Gyokeres, with the Gunners in desperate need of a striker after going a fifth season without a major trophy under Mikel Arteta.
He said: “There's Viktor Gyokeres, who is going to be the target for many clubs. Arsenal are taking a serious look at him with their new sporting director, Andrea Berta, a big fan. [There’s] Manchester United with Ruben Amorim, who knows and loves him so much from their time together at Sporting Lisbon.”
Amorim was in charge of Sporting CP when Gyokeres made the move to Portugal in 2023. He penned a five-year contract with the Primeira Liga side as he was signed for an initial fee of just £17m. Gyokeres has scored a stunning 38 goals in 32 league games this season with his tally in all competitions a mega 52 goals in 50 appearances. He also has 13 assists.
Since his move to Sporting, he has played 100 times and scored 95 goals along with 28 assists - with those impressive numbers making him one of Europe’s most in-demand strikers.
What Ruben Amorim has said about potential Gyokeres deal
Asked recently about a possible move for the Sweden international, United boss Amorim insisted that Champions League football should not be a deciding factor for players to move to Old Trafford.
He said: “Gyokeres deal? I didn’t talk to him. But if a player only wants to come to Man United to play Champions League, then he won’t come. We want players who want to represent United, not players who want to play certain competitions.”
Goals have been a major issue for United this season and signing a new striker is a priority for the club. Liam Delap appears the leading candidate due to his release clause of £30m and his reported desire to make the move to the Red Devils.
However, the Red Devils could be in a much stronger position by next Thursday if they can pick up the Europa League trophy. Recent reports claimed Arsenal have offered Delap a deal alongside their plan to still pursue Gyokeres. Amorim could do with more than one goal-scorer in the summer, so nothing is preventing United from attempting to lure both Delap and Gyokeres to Old Trafford if they can win the Europa League.
