A Newcastle United midfielder has emerged on the transfer radar of a number of their Premier League rivals

After an outstanding second half of the season secured comfortable Premier League survival, Wolverhampton Wanderers and manager Vítor Pereira will know they must strengthen this summer if they are to push on and aim higher next year.

While this would be a blow, it would represent Wolves’ record sale and give the club a significant amount of money to spend over the summer. The West Midlands outfit have had to grow accustomed to dealing with the loss of star names, with each of the club’s four highest sales happening in the last two seasons. Left-back Rayan Aït-Nouri has also been linked with an exit, though the club are working on negotiating a new contract for the Algerian at Molineux.

Another position where Wolves will be looking to strengthen is in midfield. Newcastle United star Sean Longstaff is reported to be on the move this summer, and could be an interesting option for Wanderers if they decide to add personnel in the middle of the park.

Newcastle man could be available for bargain price

Longstaff has seen first-team opportunities increasingly limited this season, and the 27-year-old could look for a move away from his boyhood club as he looks to get his career back on track. With the return of Sandro Tonali to the Toon midfield, Longstaff has played just 787 minutes of Premier League football and made eight starts as Eddie Howe’s side target a return to the Champions League.

Longstaff also represents pure profit for the Magpies under the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules, so a transfer away from St. James’ Park this summer would appeal to both parties as he enters the final year of his contract.

Wolves could join the race for Longstaff

Longstaff could be just the type of player Wolves need this summer, and it would surely be a missed opportunity should the West Midlands side not join the race for the experienced midfielder at such a low price.

Premier League experience is something Wolves lack in midfield, with none of their midfielders having more than two full seasons in the division under their belt. By contrast, Longstaff has made 171 Premier League appearances since making his top-flight debut in 2018, scoring 10 goals.
