Sam Allardyce tells Newcastle United what their summer ‘priority’ must be before anything else

There is one thing that Newcastle United absolutely must not do this summer according to Sam Allardyce.

The 2024/25 campaign has been remarkably good for the Magpies, and it is not over yet.

Newcastle United won the Carabao Cup in March, while they could end the Premier League season as high as second in the table.

Eddie Howe’s side are on the brink of qualifying for the Champions League, while wins over Arsenal and Everton will see Newcastle United end the campaign in second place behind Liverpool.

It has been a special season, but attention will soon turn towards what the 2025/26 campaign has in store.

Sam Allardyce says Newcastle United’s owners are under pressure

It is going to be an important summer transfer window for Newcastle, with Howe wanting at least three signings.

The Newcastle United owners simply must freshen up Howe’s squad, and Sam Allardyce has suggested that the club could go backwards if they fail to back the manager this summer.

Speaking on the No Tippy Tappy Football podcast, Allardyce said that PIF are under pressure to back Howe in the transfer market.

“Where will Newcastle go from here?” he asked.

“The pressure lies with the owners of Newcastle to give Eddie more ammunition. They must free up some funds to go out and buy.

“The good thing is he doesn’t need more than one or two big boys that are better than what he has already got, if he can find them.

“That would be a priority for Newcastle. Otherwise there could be a decline next season, because you’ve got to keep improving.”

Whether Newcastle United could challenge for the title

Newcastle United have been relentless in 2025.

The Magpies’ form since the turn of the year has been spectacular, with a run of results that would make them title contenders had they not started the campaign in such inconsistent fashion.

Eventually, PIF want Newcastle to win the Premier League. However, that feels like it is a long way away.

However, Ben Foster believes that Newcastle are ‘not a million miles away’ from challenging for the title.

The former Premier League goalkeeper recently stated that Newcastle need three ‘big boy’ signings to be title contenders.

For Eddie Howe, his goal will be for Newcastle United to become Champions League regulars and consistently challenge for trophies. This season cannot just be a flash in the pan.

The club must continue to progress, which is why PIF have to back Howe in the transfer market this summer.
