David Ornstein has provided a fresh update on reports of Liverpool’s interest in Bayer Leverkusen star Florian Wirtz.
Reports from multiple German news outlets revealed that the German international is wanted by Liverpool.
Bayern Munich have long been considered the frontrunners for his signature, but recent developments suggest the race remains wide open.
For example, theKölner Stadt-Anzeiger reported that, contrary to media narratives portraying Wirtz as Bayern-bound, the 22-year-old has not decided on his next club.
The report revealed that Wirtz’s representatives have had detailed discussions with both Manchester City and Liverpool. The report also suggested that Liverpool would be able to pay the transfer fee involved in a possible deal.
Meanwhile, German publication Kicker offered a slightly different perspective on the story.
They reported that, contrary to reports that Wirtz had travelled to Manchester City on Tuesday along with his parents, who are his advisors, the German international had instead travelled to Liverpool by private jet to inspect the club’s facilities and discuss a potential move.
However, reliable journalist David Ornstein has now provided a fresh update on the deal.
According to the journalist, while Liverpool are keen on Wirtz, it is unclear at this time if the German is interested in leaving Germany.
“Liverpool have made contact with the representatives of Florian Wirtz to express an interest in signing him if he leaves Bayer Leverkusen and is keen on moving to England,” Ornstein wrote for The Athletic.
He then added that “Liverpool’s admiration is long-standing, but it is unclear whether Wirtz intends to depart the team or country he is playing in at present.”
Ornstein’s assertion does cast some doubt on Wirtz’s potential move to Liverpool, with fellow Bundesliga club Bayern Munich the favourites in the race for his signature if the 22-year-old decides to remain in Germany.
However, Ornstein did not rule out the possibility of Wirtz joining Slot’s side, confirming that Liverpool would be willing to explore a move for the 22-year-old if he were open to moving to the Premier League.
“Should this (leaving Germany) emerge as a genuine possibility, the Premier League champions would be ready to explore a deal, and that is why they are one of the clubs in touch with his camp about the situation.”
