Former Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag could make his return to management in the Bundesliga as he is reportedly a candidate to replace Xabi Alonso at Bayer Leverkusen.

The 55-year-old was sacked by United in October after winning just four out of 14 games in the Premier League this season.

During his two-and-a-bit years at Old Trafford, Ten Hag won the Carabao Cup and FA Cup, though he failed to secure Champions League football in his final full season at the club.

Since being dismissed by United seven months ago, Ten Hag has been linked with various managerial positions, including clubs in the Serie A.

However, The Athletic reports that the Dutchman's return to the dugout could come in Germany as he has been shortlisted as one of several candidates who could replace Alonson at Leverkusen.

Last week, the Spaniard announced that he would be leaving the club after Sunday's Bundesliga finale against Mainz 05. Alonso is then expected to succeed Carlo Ancelotti at Real Madrid.

Ten Hag has previous experience of working in Germany as he oversaw Bayern Munich's reserve side between 2013 and 2015, with Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola in charge of the first team.

Should Ten Hag succeed Alonso at Leverkusen, then he could come up against United next season if his former side are able to qualify for the competition by defeating Tottenham Hotspur in next week's Europa League final.
