Having endured a dire domestic campaign that currently sees them languishing near the relegation zone, United’s hopes of rescuing their season now rest on the showdown in Bilbao.
A win would not only bring a major European trophy back to Old Trafford but also guarantee Champions League qualification.
A crucial goal for INEOS and Ruben Amorim.
However, that success may come at a price.
Manchester United face financial worries due to contractual clauses
As per Manchester Evening News, Manchester United are set to be hit with a financial blow worth over £30m if they lift the Europa League next week.
The report explains that due to existing contractual clauses, the club must reward the majority of the squad with 25% wage increases upon Champions League qualification.
This means high earners like Casemiro, currently on £350,000 per week, would see their salaries jump to £437,500.
A substantial rise that will significantly increase the club’s wage bill overnight.
To make matters worse, the expected revenue from the Europa League and their low league finish won’t cover the costs.
The Red Devils stand to earn around £10.95m for winning the competition and £14m for finishing 16th in the Premier League.
Based on last season’s figures, far less than what would normally be banked from Champions League qualification via the league.

Although next season’s Champions League prize money could help offset the cost, with clubs earning at least £15.7m for simply reaching the league phase, the immediate hit to the club’s finances is substantial.
Tottenham, meanwhile, will also be due bonuses if they win.
£3m is reportedly set to be shared among the players, while Ange Postecoglou would receive a £2m reward.
Ruben Amorim is also understood to be in line for a bonus, though the figure remains undisclosed as per MEN’s report.
All eyes are now on Bilbao, where both clubs will not only be fighting for silverware, but also for the financial stability and planning that comes with it.
