Blockbuster NBA Trade Idea Has 76ers Land Suns Kevin Durant for $211 Million Star

The Philadelphia 76ers didn't have the ideal 2024-25 NBA season with their Big 3 of Joel Embiid, Paul George and Tyrese Maxey. The star trio experienced a plethora of injuries that held them back from reaching their full potential. The injury setback limited them to only 15 games together.

But the 76ers remain optimistic with their group and are hopeful to have them back next season.

As a result of their 24-58 record last season, Philadelphia was rewarded with the No. 3 pick at the 2025 NBA Draft Lottery. To some, it could help the 76ers add a young prospect to support the All-Stars. However, CBS Sports' Sam Quinn suggested they trade the pick with George.

Quinn proposed that Philly trade George and the third overall pick for Phoenix Suns star Kevin Durant. The 15-time All-Star has an uncertain future in Phoenix after the Suns missed the postseason with a 36-46 record.

Given that the Suns only have one pick in the first round (29th), acquiring a top-three draft pick could entice the organization. For the 76ers, they'll still have a Big 3, only this time, they'll move George and dump his four-year, $211 million contract.

"Nobody hunts stars like Daryl Morey, and this pick is one of the most powerful tools he's ever had to do it with. So here, he takes one last swing on the Joel Embiid era and escapes the last three years of George's contract by going after Durant," Quinn wrote.

After the draft lottery, however, 76ers' team president Daryl Morey revealed the organization's plan for the pick. According to him, via The Athletic's Mike Vorkunov, they plan to keep and use it in June.

Pairing Embiid and Durant could elevate the team's chances of being contenders. KD is an experienced superstar who has won two championships with the Golden State Warriors. His potential addition could make the big man's life easier if they share the court since he's an elite shot maker.

However, the Suns forward will be 37 once the 2025-26 season starts, and his health has also been an issue over the past years. It will be a risk to trade for him as Embiid's possible running mate.
