The LA Lakers and new team leader Luka Doncic, acquired mid-season, were eliminated in the first round of the 2025 NBA Playoffs. The Slovenian star played through a back injury in the decisive Game 5.

Despite his efforts, he drew sharp criticism on the NBA on TNT, particularly from Hall of Famer Charles Barkley.

"You're an elite player and you're getting ready to get 300-400 million dollars, you gotta get in shape to earn that money. He can't guard anybody," Barkley said. "Luka can't guard a chair.

"He gotta learn to play defense and get in shape," Chuck added. "Try getting in shape first, and then it would help."

Looking back, Doncic's fitness reportedly contributed to the Dallas Mavericks' shocking decision to trade him in February for Anthony Davis.

Still, Luka has embraced the criticism as motivation. Many believe he should take inspiration from 40-year-old LeBron James—a conditioning machine—heading into the offseason.
