Former Newcastle United favourite Nikos Dabizas will be running in this year's Blaydon Race.

The ex-defender will take part in the event on Monday, June 9, to raise funds and awareness for Red Sky Foundation.

The charity, which is the official charity partner of the race, works to improve access to defibrillators, fund cardiac care, and provide heart health education in schools and communities across the North East.

It also supports people living with heart conditions, including those being treated at Newcastle's Freeman Hospital.

The Blaydon Race covers 5.9 miles from Newcastle's Quayside to Blaydon.

Dabizas, a former Greek international, said: "I’m proud to be taking part in this year’s Blaydon Race in support of Red Sky Foundation - a charity that’s doing vital work to save lives right here in the North East.

"The race is such a special event, full of local pride and passion, and I can’t wait to be part of it while raising awareness for a cause that’s close to my heart - quite literally."

Sergio Petrucci, founder of Red Sky Foundation, said: "It’s an honour to have Nikos running in aid of Red Sky Foundation and to be the official charity partner of the Blaydon Race.

"This gives us a fantastic opportunity to shine a spotlight on the importance of heart health and get more people involved in our mission to save lives in local communities."

Race entries are now full, but supporters can sponsor Dabizas via his fundraising page at https://redskyfoundation.enthuse.com/pf/nikos-dabizas
