Taiwo Awoniyi update as Nottingham Forest striker undergoes further surgery

Taiwo Awoniyi is said to have woken from an induced coma after having surgery on an abdominal injury.

The Nottingham Forest striker underwent urgent surgery on Monday, after suffering the injury during the Reds’ Premier League clash with Leicester City at the City Ground on Sunday.

Awoniyi was then placed into an induced coma before undergoing further surgery on Wednesday.

It is understood he was woken from the induced coma on Wednesday evening.

Awoniyi suffered the injury as he crashed into a post trying to convert a cross into the penalty area from Anthony Elanga in the closing stages of the match against Leicester.

He received treatment before returning to the pitch for the final minutes.

Head coach Nuno Espirito Santo had been given the thumbs up by the medical team for Awoniyi to continue playing against the Foxes.

Club owner Evangelos Marinakis was unhappy about the situation, calling it a “misjudgement” from the medical staff in a statement on Sunday night.

“Everybody – coaching staff, players, supporters and including myself – we were frustrated around the injury of Taiwo and the medical staff’s misjudgement on Taiwo’s ability to continue the game,” he said.
