Surgery considered - fresh injury blow forces Newcastle United transfer rethink

Sven Botman has featured just six times in the Premier League for Newcastle United this season.

Sven Botman reportedly could miss the rest of Newcastle United’s season and will undergo further tests on his knee.

Eddie Howe revealed following the Chelsea game that the Dutchman was “icing” his knee at half-time. Botman was subbed on 55 minutes and fear emanated around St James’ Park given his injury history.

The 25-year-old missed three months with an ACL tear at the start of last season. Deciding not to perform surgery, Botman - having looked a shell of his usual self - went under the knife in March 2024. This ruled the centre-back out for nine months before he returned against Tottenham Hotspur in January.

However, disaster struck again as Botman picked up a problem in his other knee. This sidelined the defender for three months until he featured in stoppage time against Brighton a fortnight ago.

Summoned into the starting line-up on Sunday, Botman lasted less than an hour before his eventual withdrawal. The Telegraph now claim he has not trained all week and is due a scan to see the extent of the issue.

Huge concerns at Newcastle that Sven Botman is going to miss the rest of the season with another injury. He’s not been able to train this week and is due to have a scan to determine extent of the problem. Worrying times for #nufc with two huge games remaining

Eddie Howe gave worrying update on Sven Botman

Speaking post-match after beating Chelsea, Howe did not fill supporters with confidence that Botman came through unscathed. He said: "He was slightly uncomfortable in the half-time break with a knee problem. I don't think it's serious.

“He was obviously OK to carry on but he was feeling something so, tactically, I thought it would help us to change. He was icing a problem at half-time, so we hope he's ok. With that in mind and the fact I felt we needed to change tactically, we made a change, brought Lewy (Miley) on.”

Newcastle United transfer plans forced into rethink?

Botman’s fresh blow - even if not serious - realigns Newcastle’s transfer priorities ahead of the summer window. The Magpies should be thankful that just two games remain and Champions League is almost secured as the centre-back may face another lengthy spell on the sidelines.

Dan Burn and Fabian Schar have been rock-solid and dependable despite entering the twilight of their careers. Turning 33 and 34 this year, Newcastle cannot ask the duo to churn out 50-game seasons next year.

NewcastleWorld understands a centre-back was a priority regardless of Botman’s fitness. Marc Guehi was infamously targeted last year and that deal could be one to watch again as he enters the final year of his contract.

That priority may have moved up the wish list given the recent Botman news. Newcastle cannot afford to hinge their Premier League and European campaigns on the Dutchman’s waning injury record.
