Report: Former Wolves manager Gary O'Neil named among frontrunners to land Championship job

Former Wolves head coach Gary O’Neil could be set for a return to management, having been interviewed by a club.

The Englishman was sacked by Wanderers back in December, having overseen a poor start to the 2024/25 season with Wolves.

Wolves had a difficult start in terms of their fixture list.

But it was felt that Gary O’Neil should have done a lot better, and eventually Fosun felt that way too.

A 2-1 defeat to Ipswich Town was the final straw, and O’Neil was relieved of his duties. It was a result that left Wolves 19th in the Premier League table, and the loss of discipline had been on show for all to see.

The time of O’Neil’s sacking was chairman Jeff Shi’s lowest point at Wolves, and certainly many fans were extremely worried about the fate of the club at the time of his departure.

Thankfully, Wolves have been able to recover under Vitor Pereira.

And now, it appears one club might be ready to take a chance on O’Neil following his failure at Wolves.

It’s been reported by The Telegraph that O’Neil has already been interviewed by Championship side Norwich City.

TalkSPORT claim O’Neil is actually now a ‘leading candidate’ to get the job.

But it’s not a given he is appointed, because Norwich are also set to speak to former Liverpool assistant manager Pep Lijnders at some point this week.

Norwich are looking for a new manager after sacking Johannes Hoff Thorup last month.

Jack Wilshere had taken the team on an interim basis for a couple of games and picked up four points. But Norwich officials will not consider him for the permanent position.

O’Neil, of course, is a former Norwich player having made 55 appearances for them, spending a couple of years at Carrow Road from 2014 to 2016.

O’Neil has also previously been linked with the Southampton job so seemingly, there is a strong chance we will see him in the Championship next term.

A chance for O’Neil to rebuild his reputation

O’Neil looks to be firmly in the frame for the Norwich job and it’ll be interesting to see how he does if he gets it.

His reputation has taken a real hit since he was sacked by Wolves. And Pereira doing so well since he left has not been a particularly good reflection on him.

Gary O’Neil as Wolves manager

Games managed – 63

Wins – 20

Draws – 11

Losses – 32

Goals scored – 94

Goals conceded – 117

But this could potentially be a good next move for him.

Obviously he’s been at the club as a player previously, which may buy him some respect and admiration right off the bat.

O’Neil did show signs of being a very capable manager at Wolves until it all went pear-shaped, and there’s every chance a Championship gig will really suit him.
