£42m deal ‘being discussed’ by Newcastle – Transfer rumour ramps up, but is it realistic?

Newcastle United are clearly in the market for some new attacking talent this summer, with a right-winger and striker expected to arrive as we prepare for the return of European football.

Alexander Isak’s spot in the team is certainly not in question, but there are concerns about our lack of depth through the middle should the Swede pick up a knock or need a rest.

Callum Wilson’s contract is set to expire and while Wil Osula has shown quality in flashes, he is not a finished product and may well be loaned out next season.

We need another option, but finding the right man at the right price will be tough considering Isak is very much our starting striker and star man in attack.

Newcastle have previously been linked to Bayer Leverkusen striker Victor Boniface, who has eight goals in 19 Bundesliga outings this season.

The Nigerian was named an emerging target via the African media earlier this week, but it’s now German outlet [SportBILD](https://sportbild.bild.de/) who have made some bold claims in the last 24 hours on our alleged pursuit of the striker.

They insist that Newcastle are ‘after him’ and even state that a ‘€50m (£42m) deal is being discussed’, with the player himself keen to move after struggling for regular starts this season.

At just 24-years-old, he is still a relatively young player who has shown signs of real promise, scoring 11 in 18 Europa League outings, along with 22 in 42 Bundesliga appearances.

Perhaps we are moving on from Man Utd-bound Liam Delap, although we have our doubts about Newcastle’s ability to bring in a £40m-plus forward when we already own Alexander Isak and will likely spend the bulk of our budget on a right-winger and centre-back.

Given Boniface’s stature and the fact he is unlikely to lack other suitors, the big question would be why would he want to play back-up to Isak at Newcastle. After all, it seems a lack of starts is a big reason he’s leaving Leverkusen in the first place.

We have seen in recent years that Isak’s fitness levels aren’t totally dependable and with more fixtures than ever before likely across the 2025/26 season, we will certainly need a far more reliable and dangerous alternative to Callum Wilson to call on.

Boniface would be brilliant, I just wonder if this is agent-driven chatter from Africa and Germany in a bid to whip up more interest in the Nigerian.
