Wirtz! Frimpong! Huijsen! Kerkez! Amidst all the transfer rumour bombs dropping yesterday, Liverpool FC beat reporter for the Daily Mail Lewis Steele quietly laid a sneaky one in the form of links to RB Leipzig’s Lutsharel Geetruida.
Fans who have read up on Slot’s career will recall Geetruida to be a key figure of Slot’s Feyenoord sides. The 24-year-old Dutchman played right-back, centre-back and even occasionally stepped into defensive midfield at times - providing versatility, technical ability, and game intelligence. That ability and his comfort on the ball would theoretically allow Liverpool to invert him into midfield for games that require a bit more control and numbers in midfield.
Geetruida moved to RB Leipzig for €25 million in August 2024, and according to Steele, Leipzig are said to value him at €35 million, with the player under contract until 2029. He cites Liverpool’s good relationship with Leipzig as a potential factor.
“Liverpool have always enjoyed a healthy business relationship with RB Leipzig, having bought Ibrahima Konate and Dominik Szboszslai from them in recent seasons. Nothing has advanced beyond interest at present. Geertruida’s future, though, should be followed closely.”
The Frimpong deal sounds like it’s going to go over the line, and I’d bet on Liverpool going for a player with a release clause that has installments built into the structure. But Liverpool would still probably need another centre-back for depth, and they could do worse than one that plays right-back and defensive midfield and is familiar with working with Arne Slot.
