Newcastle United could again look to capitalize on clubs under pressure to meet Premier League Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR) by June 30, with Aston Villa among those reportedly needing to sell.
According to Daily Mail’s Craig Hope, the Magpies are keeping tabs on potential opportunities that might pop up in the next few weeks.
“Yes, there are [clubs in PSR trouble], and the word in the game is that Villa will have to sell at least one,” Hope wrote. “Newcastle like Jacob Ramsey, but could they afford to spend a decent chunk of their budget on a midfielder? I’m not so sure, unless the deal was manufactured in a way to suit all parties.”
Ramsey is considered one to watch, especially with reported Premier League interest in Newcastle winger Harvey Barnes, possibly opening a route for a player-plus-cash arrangement.
On the striker front, Newcastle continue to plan around the future of Alexander Isak, while also preparing for all possibilities.
”“If Isak stays, and Newcastle desperately want him to, then his back-up will either continue to be Callum Wilson and William Osula or, as they hope to do, sign a versatile right-winger who is a legitimate deputy at No 9,” Hope wrote.
That’s where Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo come in, both liked for their ability to operate across attacking positions.
Hope also confirmed ongoing monitoring of Ipswich striker Liam Delap, although the Magpies might face competition from Man Utd to sign the already-relegated forward.
Newcastle’s scouting has extended further, however, as Hope noted.
“What I can reveal is that Newcastle have continued to watch RB Leipzig striker Benjamin Sesko, including during last weekend’s 3–3 draw with Bayern Munich, in which he scored a fabulous goal,” Hope wrote. “He would not be a back-up option to Isak, but he could be a replacement.”
Sesko has a £67 million release clause, which might make a move hard to pull off without hurting the room for additions at other positions of greater need, assuming Isak stays put next season.
