Liverpool are in talks to make Bayer Leverkusen defender Jeremie Frimpong their first signing of the summer transfer window. Negotiations are ongoing with the player's representatives to agree a deal with the Reds ready to trigger Frimpong's release clause, which is believed to be in the region of £30million.

Frimpong, a right-sided player who has featured at both full-back and wing-back for Leverkusen, is keen to move to the newly-crowned Premier League champions.

With Trent Alexander-Arnold having last week confirmed he will leave Liverpool at the end of the season on a free transfer, Liverpool have decided to bolster their right-back options to provide competition to Conor Bradley.

Frimpong, a 24-year-old Holland international, has five goals and 12 assists in 48 appearances this season, and had 26 goal contributions last term as Leverkusen won the German league and cup double and also reached the Europa League final.

It is understood Leverkusen are being kept aware of developments, although they will have no option but to permit the sale of the player should his release clause be triggered.

Frimpong arrived at Leverkusen in 2021 after spending two years at Celtic, where he won the Scottish Premiership, Scottish Cup and Scottish League Cup.

He has the added benefit of fitting the criteria as a "homegrown" player after spending almost a decade with Manchester City's youth set-up having moved to their academy at the age of nine.

Frimpong was part of the Leverkusen side thrashed 4-0 at Anfield by Liverpool during the Champions League opening stage in November.
