Tottenham podcaster gives his views on whether Son Heung-min should start vs Man United

Tottenham skipper Son Heung-min returned against Crystal Palace on Sunday after missing last seven games due to foot injury

Tottenham Hotspur’s rotten luck with injuries this season has shown no signs of stopping. Spurs have had an awful campaign, and the biggest reason behind their issues on the pitch has been injuries to key players.

Ange Postecoglou has had to chop and change his starting XI almost in every single game, thanks to the unavailability of players either due to injury problems or suspensions. On Wednesday, there was a new addition to the injury list. Dejan Kulusevski has undergone surgery on his knee and will miss Spurs’ UEFA Europa League final against Manchester United in Bilbao on May 21.

In addition to Kulusevski, James Maddison and Lucas Bergvall have also been ruled out for the rest of the season with respective knee and ankle issues. On Sunday against Crystal Palace, though, the Tottenham fans witnessed the return of their skipper Son Heung-min from a foot injury. He has had to sit out for seven games, but returned on the bench for Spurs in their home defeat to the Eagles.

The forward, like majority of his teammates, have had a disappointing season and the Europa League final appears the last chance to turn things around and secure Champions League football next season. However, after only returning from injury last weekend, will Ange Postecoglou put Son Heung-min straight back into the starting XI against Man United?

Last Word on Spurs podcast creator and host Ricky Sacks has now given his views on whether Son should start in the Europa League final next week. He feels the South Korean needs to play before the final to prove his fitness to the gaffer before a decision is made on him.

“I think it’s a difficult one, I think we’re going to need to see Sony play in my opinion ahead of the Man United game to see where he’s at to then make that decision. I just think you can just throw him back in,” Ricky Sacks said on talkSPORT’s Inside Spurs podcast.

Before the European final, Tottenham play their penultimate Premier League game against Aston Villa at Villa Park on Friday evening. Ange would have loved to play the showpiece event in Spain after the 2-0 home loss to Palace last weekend, but he and his team will have to negotiate the Villa fixture.

Given key players like Maddison, Bergvall and Kulusevski dropping out of the squad, the North Londoners cannot afford any more injury issues. The game at Villa, though, will give Ange an opportunity to test some of the youngsters in his squad as well as give experienced players like Son some more minutes in their tanks to get prepared for the big game on May 21.

While Son has had a tough season, if there was ever a game for him to step up and show to his bystanders that still has something to offer at a ripe age of 32, it is against Ruben Amorim’s United in Bilbao. There is no more deserving person at the club to lead this team to their first major trophy in 17 years, but it would be huge for everyone associated with Tottenham.
