When Everton signed Moise Kean as a 19-year-old back in 2019 there was much excitement and expectation. But four years and two loans spells later, the Italian forward would head through the Goodison Park exit.
Kean was hot property in European football when Everton, then managed by Marco Silva, paid a little over £25m for the forward from Juventus. It was seen as a deal that signalled the intention of the Toffees to be bold in the market and to position themselves for a shot at long-term success.
Of course, much tumult behind the scenes followed and the plan of former owner Farhad Moshiri to disrupt the cosy nature of the so-called ‘big six’ never came to fruition, with the club falling into financial distress, something that would have a detrimental effect on how competitive the club were in the Premier League.
Kean never managed to ignite in the way that was hoped at Everton, bagging just two goals in 35 games across all competitions during his three seasons at the club.

In order to try and recoup some money during his stay, Kean spent loan spells at both Juventus and Paris Saint-Germain, the club keen to try and make sure his value didn’t depreciate significantly with one eye on a permanent sale.
That permanent deal came about in 2023, when Kean rejoined Juventus. His two-year spell on loan in Turin delivered £6m in loan fees for Everton, while Juve were obliged to pay £24m to sign him outright. That meant that Everton ended up being net positive by around £5m on the deal, although the plan around his signing originally was to see him boom in value through success on the pitch and his age and profile. That never came to fruition, though.
But the value boost that Everton never managed to achieve looks on the cards for Italian Serie A side Fiorentina, the club where Kean signed last year.
In the past 12 months at the club, Kean has netted 17 times in 30 games for the club and that has put top clubs on alert once again, just like they were back in 2019.
Analysts at Swiss-based CIES Football Observatory have looked at the market value of players during the past season in Europe and focused on the capital gains in terms of value creation.
Unsurprisingly, Kylian Mbappe tops the list due to his signing for Real Madrid from PSG on a free transfer last summer, with his current value standing at €182.4m (£154m). Second on the list is Bournemouth’s Madrid-bound defender Dean Huijsen, whose value according to the CIES data has increased by £58m, although Real look set to acquire him for a £50m sum.
Following Huijsen comes Manchester City’s Savio and Bayern Munich’s Michael Olise, but in fifth spot on the list is Kean.
The statistical model adopted by CIES to reach their findings included a number of variables, including; contract, age, sporting level, domestic minutes, international minutes, goals, results, starting 11, position, international status, releasing club selling potential, releasing league selling potential, destination club buying potential and destination league buying potential.
Kean’s current value is pegged at €59.7m (£50.3m), with such a valuation representing a potential £35.2m capital gain year on year based on the CIES metrics adopted.
That would suggest that Kean’s value has doubled from the sale price from Everton to Juventus two summers ago, with Fiorentina in line to realise a handsome profit should they decide to cash in on the Italian forward this summer.
Everton made a small profit from Kean, something that was lauded at the time due to the minimal impact that he had at Goodison Park. But his recent boost in valuation at least vindicates his recruitment at the time given the value creation that has been seen since. Had he delivered for Everton then the higher ranking of the Premier League would have seen that value climb higher than its current state. For Kean himself, who has been linked with a move back to the Premier League with Newcastle United, he has managed to deliver on his talent back in Italy, and that will reap rewards for both him and his current club.
