Davide Ancelotti could potentially be the next Rangers manager after what the Real Madrid assistant manager has decided.

The Gers are looking for a new permanent head coach, with Barry Ferguson likely taking charge of his final home game against Dundee United on 14 May.

Ancelotti has emerged as a surprise candidate at Ibrox, and it’ll be interesting to see how the saga unfolds in the coming weeks.

With the Italian national spending his coaching career under his father Carlo, he’s arguably got big shoes to fill.

ESPN journalist reveals that there’s been a sense of the 35-year-old wanting to go his separate ways and start his own managerial career at the end of the season, which could potentially be at Ibrox.

Marsden believes the Real Madrid assistant manager wants to prove himself after several years of working under his father, Carlo.

Speaking to BBC Sport (14 May), the journalist said: “The feeling for a while has been that regardless of what happens with Carlo this summer, Davide has been looking to go on his own at the end of the season.

“I think at his age, he wants to be involved in the day-to-day. The international scene is a very different job. Perhaps it gives him that extra push he needs to now spread his wings and prove himself.

“I’m sure he feels he’s got something to prove because regardless of how good you are, if you’re the son of one of the greatest managers of all time, as the trophies say, you’re going to get accused of a certain sort of nepotism.”

Ferguson to be disappointed at Ibrox

Ferguson surely would’ve liked to continue at Ibrox beyond this season, but it looks like the prospective new owners will take a different approach.

Kevin Thelwell will leave Everton at the end of the season and join the Gers as their sporting director, with the Englishman undoubtedly having a say in who the next manager should be.

The Light Blues are waiting on Andrew Cavenagh and 49ers Enterprises to complete their takeover, which will undoubtedly start a new era in G51.

Rangers saw some positivity return after Ferguson’s appointment, as the interim manager led them to the Europa League quarter-finals, where they lost to Athletic Club.

While the Gers’ record in the European competition was decent under the ex-midfielder, they have been poor domestically, winning their first home match under him against Aberdeen on 11 May.

The former Scotland international will feel he’s made progress at the Light Blues, beating the likes of Brendan Rodgers and Jose Mourinho, but his departure may be the right call.

Ancelotti’s appointment at Ibrox may raise eyebrows, though, considering his lack of experience as a first-team head coach.

Whether the Italian coach will end up in Glasgow remains to be seen.
