Australia’s A-League, in particular, has attracted a number of international talents looking to extend their careers and explore fresh opportunities both on and off the pitch.
Despite financial hurdles, the league continues to build its profile and fan base, making it an intriguing destination for players thinking about life after top-flight European football.
Among those embracing this new frontier is Juan Mata, the World Cup winner and former Manchester United and Chelsea midfielder.
Since leaving Old Trafford in 2022, Mata has taken his talents to Western Sydney Wanderers, where he has become an important figure both on and off the field.
The 37-year-old has made 23 appearances for the club since arriving last summer and is currently in talks over extending his contract beyond June.
However, Mata’s ambitions may stretch far beyond simply playing, as he has recently hinted at exploring a role in club ownership within Australia’s football scene, as per Sports Illustrated.
“Maybe there is the opportunity to do that in Australia,” said Mata regarding club ownership.

“I think the A-League might be in a difficult financial situation right now and many of the clubs, but I see that as an opportunity that will keep growing.
“And it will grow because fans want to see football.
“I think they want to see better and better level in the A-League. I think you have everything to do that, you have the infrastructure with the stadiums, the football fans and a great lifestyle.
“There are many things that will improve and you never know, maybe I’m a part of that.”
Already a part-owner of MLS side San Diego FC, Mata is considering joining a consortium that could launch a new A-League team in Canberra, signalling a potential new chapter in his football journey.
With his charity CommonGoal recently partnering with Professional Footballers Australia, Mata’s commitment to the game in the region is clear.
The move could see Juan Mata continuing his football journey in a fresh role, leveraging his experience and passion to help boost the game Down Under.
He praised the infrastructure and passionate fan base in Australia, highlighting the league’s potential to evolve and improve in the coming years.
While his contract with Western Sydney Wanderers runs until June, Mata remains open-minded about his next steps, both as a player and as a possible club owner.
For Manchester United supporters who remember his skill and dedication, it’s encouraging to see Mata still so deeply connected to the sport, shaping its future in new and unexpected ways.
