With the Dallas Mavericks landing the opportunity to draft potential generational talent Cooper Flagg at No. 1 despite having the least likely odds, it’s understandable that Pelicans fans are even more disappointed to see their fourth-best odds materialize into the No. 7 pick. But the truth about the 2025 NBA Draft is that it is a deep class, and the Pelicans have multiple options when it comes to selecting their Top 10 lottery prospect.

This season as a freshman, Fears averaged 17 points, 4 rebounds, and 4 assists per game for the Sooners on 43.4 percent shooting from the floor. He constantly had the ball in his hands as a point of attack man, creating scoring opportunities for himself and his teammates through his exceptionally crafty ball handling.

With his ball handling as the hallmark of his game, Fears has shades of Kyrie Irving and Monta Ellis in his game. One glaring area that needs improvement is his 29 percent shooting from 3-point range. However, with Fears being the most common point of attack for the Sooners this season, most of his 3-point looks were off the dribble rather than spot-up shooting. Fears averaged four 3-point attempts per game, so there’s room to grow there.

MORE PELICANS

Since drafting Zion Williamson in 2019, the Pelicans have struggled to establish a consistent starting point guard in the starting lineups he’s in. Drafting Fears could be the point guard for a Pelicans future with or without Williamson.

Currently, the Pelicans start Dejounte Murray, who working his way back from an Achilles injury, as their starting point guard. They also signed Gretna native Elfrid Payton to a full-time roster spot after two 10-day contracts this season. Jose Alvardo also saw increased minutes amid team injuries.
