The summer of 2025 promises to be a defining one for Liverpool, and the Reds may have just put themselves at the heart of the biggest transfer saga of the year. According to The Athletic, Liverpool have officially contacted Florian Wirtz’s representatives.
Liverpool have expressed their interest in a potential blockbuster move should the German prodigy opt to leave Bayer Leverkusen.
Wirtz, still 21, has already surpassed 200 professional appearances, boasting a Bundesliga title, a Player of the Season award, and a reputation as one of Europe’s most devastating creators.
The attacking midfielder has followed up a dazzling 2023-24 campaign with 10 goals and 12 assists this season. That too, maintaining world-class consistency in a Leverkusen side that continues to thrill under Xabi Alonso.

Liverpool move for Wirtz as rivals fade from race
The Reds’ interest is anything but new. As The Athletic have confirmed that,
“Liverpool’s admiration is long-standing but it is unclear whether Wirtz intends to depart the team or country he is playing in at present.
Should this emerge as a genuine possibility, the Premier League champions would be ready to explore a deal and that is why they are one of the clubs in touch with his camp about the situation.”
However, they are now in conversation – and with Manchester City turning their attention to PSG’s Desire Doue and Bayern Munich needing to offload before buying, Liverpool might just have a clear shot.
Wirtz would command an eye-watering fee – €150 m? Pay it, says German football writer Sebastian Stafford-Bloor. But for a player of such rare ability, the price might just match the reward.
“Wirtz is sensational – and there is still some growing to do,” Stafford-Bloor adds. “a brilliant carrier… replete with an array of knifing, penetrative passes.”
Yet like any young star, he has areas to improve. His consistency in front of the goal, and evading elite-level man-marking need to be sharpened. But in a Liverpool side stacked with creativity, Wirtz wouldn’t need to shoulder the burden alone.
Let’s not forget: this is a player who played a starring role in a title-winning, unbeaten Bundesliga campaign and led his side to a European final. If Liverpool are dreaming big, Wirtz fits the bill – and then some.
