Liverpool have intensified their pursuit of Bayer Leverkusen’s Florian Wirtz, with reports breaking on Wednesday confirming direct contact between the Premier League champions and the German playmaker’s representatives.

The 22-year-old, regarded as one of Europe’s brightest young talents, is said to be a long-standing target for Liverpool, who are keen to strengthen their creative options under manager Arne Slot.

Liverpool officials met with Wirtz and his family in England earlier this week to express their interest, should the player decide to leave Germany.

This move comes amid fierce competition from both Bayern Munich and Manchester City, with Bayern widely seen as the frontrunner after reportedly receiving a verbal commitment from Wirtz.

City view the German international as a potential long-term successor to Kevin De Bruyne.

Wirtz was instrumental in Leverkusen’s historic Bundesliga title win last season, tallying 11 goals and 12 assists, and has continued his impressive form into the current campaign.

He is under contract until 2027, and Leverkusen has set a €150 million (£126.5m) price tag, although this fee is said to be lower for clubs outside of the Bundesliga.

The gargantuan fee being quoted is to deter Bayern Munich.

Leverkusen would prefer to sell him to a foreign side rather than to Bundesliga rivals, giving Premier League clubs a potential edge in negotiations over Bayern Munich.

According to BILD, the Reds are serious about Wirtz – but the player has reached an agreement in principle with the German giants:

“Liverpool are serious about snatching Florian Wirtz away from Bayern.”

“Even though Bayern and Wirtz are said to have reached an agreement in principle a tough transfer negotiation looms with Leverkusen, who want €150 million for Wirtz.”

It would also be a serious signal of intent if Liverpool sealed the deal as the German international is a coveted player wanted by Europe’s elite.

With UEFA Nations League fixtures approaching, this transfer story could continue throughout the summer.

Wirtz and his advisors are said to be in no rush to make a decision, preferring to assess all options and ensure the best move for his development.
