It would be fair to say that [Evan Ferguson’s](https://www.claretandhugh.info/evan-fergusons-striking-timely-reminder/) loan spell at West Ham has been a bit of a disaster. Virtually no game time and little impact, Brighton’s young striker will head back to the South Coast at the end of the month feeling that half of this season has been wasted. For fans it has all been a bit of a head-scratcher, especially as Hammer’s manager Graham Potter was originally thought to be keen on the young striker.
Fergusons’ lack of impact must have further dented his confidence and could have serious ramifications for the Republic of Ireland player’s international career.
Reported in the [belfasttelegraph.co.uk](https://www.belfasttelegraph.co.uk/sport/football/international/republic-of-ireland-boss-reveals-why-hes-not-getting-involved-in-evan-fergusons-club-level-struggles/a239467722.html) his national side manager Heimir Hallgrimsson has been speaking about the repercussions of Ferguson’s failed spell at London Stadium.
_“He hasn’t been getting game time at West Ham, we just want to see where he is at the moment… All players know you have more chance of playing for the national team if playing on a regular basis ..and more chance if you’re playing well. I think he’s much more frustrated than me that he’s not playing”_
No way could Evan Ferguson have expected to have become a permanent feature of West Ham’s bench for this latter half of the season: I’m sure he is as puzzled as West Ham fans as to his apparent fall from favour. If he’s lucky, his national coach will keep the faith for Ireland’s up and coming fixtures – after all, Ferguson’s only goal since joining West Ham did come in his countries’ colours. A frustrating episode in West Ham’s and the young man’s career, but one from which he will hopefully recover.
