Everton defender Jake O’Brien will require a late fitness test ahead of the game against Southampton, according to Dr Rajpal Brar.

The injury expert claims that there isn’t much information provided by the Goodison Park outfit avoid the specifics of the setback.

The Republic of Ireland international has been out of action since the 2-2 draw against Ipswich Town on 3 May.

O’Brien may not be able to play the full 90 minutes again this season

The 24-year-old, who’s done exceptionally well as a right-back this season under Moyes, may not be ready to play the full 90 minutes this season.

After the game against Southampton at Goodison Park on Sunday, 18 May, the Toffees have just one more match left.

O’Brien may have been a temporary option for Moyes.

Speaking exclusively to Goodison News, Dr Brar, a specialist in Physical Therapy and a Sports Scientist, said about O’Brien: “There is a possibility he does not play the full 90 minutes again, depending on how serious his injury is.

“I do not see anything from the club to suggest one way or another.

“*He most certainly will require a late fitness test ahead of this weekend’s game.*“

David Moyes can turn O’Brien into a key asset for Everton next season

David Moyes can effectively deploy O’Brien at Everton next season by leveraging the young defender’s strengths.

The 23-year-old Republic of Ireland international has thrived under Moyes’ structured system, showcasing his aerial dominance, composure on the ball, and positional discipline.

The Scotsman can position O’Brien as a key starter alongside Jarrad Branthwaite in a back four, utilising his 6’5” frame to counter set-piece threats and physical forwards, areas where Everton have struggled.

His ability to initiate attacks with progressive passing fits Moyes’ emphasis on quick transitions, complementing midfielders like Idrissa Gueye.

By fostering the Irishman’s confidence through regular game time, Moyes can unlock his potential as a long-term successor to James Tarkowski or even make him an out-and-out right-back.

With Everton transitioning to their new Bramley-Moore Dock stadium, O’Brien’s reliability under Moyes’ guidance could anchor their defence, ensuring stability in a pivotal campaign.
