Gregg Popovich announces his new role as the Spurs Sports & Entertainment's president of basketball operations at e media event earlier this month.

Members of City Council filed paperwork to consider renaming San Antonio International Airport after recently retired Spurs coach and NBA Hall of Famer Gregg Popovich, Texas Public Radio reports.

Councilman Manny Pelaez initiated proposal Wednesday, setting the stage for a full council discussion on renaming the site San Antonio Gregg Popovich International Airport, according to TPR. Council members Sukh Kaur, John Courage, Adriana Rocha Garcia and Terri Castillo also signed the paperwork, fulfilling the number required on such requests by city rules.

The document isn't yet available on the city's website. The paperwork typically takes 24 hours to post.

Popovich stepped down as the Spurs' head coach earlier this month after leading the team to five NBA championships and racking up the league's winningest record. The 76-year-old Air Force vet, who was sidelined by a stroke last November, now serves as the franchise's president of basketball operations.

“Coach Popovich’s impact on San Antonio is immeasurable,” Pelaez wrote in the renaming request, according to TPR.

Procedurally, the request would need approval by council's Governance Committee before it could be advanced to discussion by the full body.

Pelaez, Courage and Rocha Garcia are departing council as their terms expire, and Kaur is fighting to keep her seat in the June 7 runoff, meaning as many as four of the request's signatories may not be on the dais by the time the proposal comes up for debate. Just the same, Pelaez told TPR he's hopeful the next council will approve the name change.
