18-year-old wonderkid wins Man Utd Young Player of the Year award after Erik ten Hag snub

It’s been a brief breakthrough season for Harry Amass who has received an award for his efforts.

The 2024/25 season is coming to a close and Manchester United are giving out awards.

Some would argue that no awards are deserved for the season we’ve endured, which may explain why Ineos have scrapped an end-of-season award ceremony.

Instead, the entire squad will be invited to an end-of-season barbecue.

The awards will still be handed out, though, but not at a dinner event like previous years. Ineos also decided to scrap those plans last year when United had another dire Premier League campaign.

United are currently positioned 16th in the league but they’ve qualified for next week’s Europa League final against Tottenham. It’s one final chance for the Red Devils to secure a spot in the Champions League.

Harry Amass wins Young Player of the Year award

It’s always an incredible experience to see a United academy graduate work their way into the first team.

That is what has been happening in recent months for Harry Amass at United.

Amass has now been named Manchester United’s Jimmy Murphy Young Player of the Year after a breakthrough season for the talented defender.

Amass, 18, was handed his first appearance for the senior side off the bench in the win at Leicester City in March. That came under Ruben Amorim, who handed Amass his full debut in the defeat to Newcastle last month.

The left-back has since started four more Premier League matches under Amorim and is gaining lots of experience in a side short of options at left-wing back.

Amass is providing cover for Patrick Dorgu on the left and his crossing already looks inviting, if only United had a decent centre forward to put the chances away.

The 18-year-old played 90 minutes in the losses at Brentford and at home to West Ham in recent weeks, and he also featured in United’s 4-1 win over Athletic Club in the Europa League semi-finals.

Erik ten Hag made Harry Amass wait for his debut

After arriving at United from Watford in 2023 and thriving in both the Under-18 and Under-21 teams, Amass was on the cusp of a chance in the first team.

Erik ten Hag would involve Amass in training with the first team and he made the bench for several first-team games.

Even though the left-back position turned out to be the most problematic for Ten Hag due to injuries, the Dutchman overlooked Amass for a spot in the team.

Amass finally got his chance under Amorim and has now been named Young Player of the Year.

He is likely to start against Chelsea in United’s next league fixture on Friday night.
