Melissa Reddy shares what she's now hearing about Florian Wirtz joining Liverpool

Liverpool would “be looking to seize an opportunity that wasn’t expected” should they sign Florian Wirtz, according to journalist Melissa Reddy.

Many were skeptical about Liverpool coming into the 2024/25 season. They had parted ways with the long-serving and much-loved Jurgen Klopp, who announced he would be stepping down early in 2024. In his place, Liverpool appointed Arne Slot who, until moving to Anfield, had been working with Feyenoord.

The 2024/25 campaign was Slot’s first in English football, though it certainly hasn’t seemed that way. Under the Dutchman, Liverpool have stormed to what is their second Premier League title. The Reds have been atop the Premier League table for much of the season and have never really looked as though they would lose that position.

Slot’s success is made all the more impressive given that Federico Chiesa, who has scarcely played, was the manager’s only outfield signing of the season. Understandably, Liverpool are looking to reinforce in the summer and give Slot the players he needs to further shape the team in his image.

Reports have suggested that Liverpool are keen on Jeremie Frimpong to replace the outgoing Trent Alexander-Arnold and it would seem that the Reds are also watching one of Frimpong’s Bayer Leverkusen teammates.

Wirtz to Liverpool?

Not only are Liverpool monitoring Frimpong, but it would seem that the Reds are also interested in Florian Wirtz. The playmaker has spent his entire senior career to date with Leverkusen, racking up well over 150 appearances for the club at just 22 years old, despite suffering an ACL injury in 2022.

Wirtz has been a crucial cog in the system of Xabi Alonso at Leverkusen, one that saw the club win a domestic double in the 2023/24 campaign. It would now appear, however, that the midfielder could be on the move this summer. As Reddy stated, this has come as a surprise. She said:

“Florian Wirtz, if they (Liverpool) are encouraged to act on interest, would be looking to seize an opportunity that wasn’t expected given he was due to remain in Germany. Manchester City and Bayern Munich have done the heavy pushing and pursuing thus far.”

As noted by Reddy, both Man City and Bayern Munich are in the race to sign Wirtz. In Liverpool, though, Wirtz would be joining a team that are looking to establish their own dominance off the back of a league title. Should the Anfield side be able to acquire his services, it must be viewed as nothing other than an exceptional bit of business.
