Report: Celtic Multi-Million Pound Transfer Payout ‘Close’

Celtic are reportedly close to getting around £7 million from Jeremie Frimpong’s likely move to Liverpool. The Dutch defender left Celtic in January 2021 to join Bayer Leverkusen for about £11 million. Celtic made sure to include a 30% sell-on clause in that deal.

Now, Liverpool are ready to pay Frimpong’s release clause, which is €40 million – about £34.2 million. That means Celtic will get 30% of the profit Leverkusen make.

Since Leverkusen bought him for £11 million and may sell him for over £34 million, the profit is around £23 million. Celtic would get about £7 million from that.

Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano says the deal is close. He shared two updates in the past two days. First, he said: (X) “Talks between Liverpool and Jeremie Frimpong’s camp over personal terms have advanced again today. Player’s always been keen on the move and Liverpool are progressing on salary, length of contract, every detail of the agreement.” He later added: “Jeremie Frimpong and Liverpool, just a matter of short time.”

Frimpong has been playing well in Germany. He’s quick, strong going forward, and suits teams that attack a lot. He’s been a key player for Leverkusen and now looks set to take the next step in his career.

This money could help Brendan Rodgers in the summer window as Celtic look to strengthen the squad. It’s also a good example of why clubs include sell-on clauses when selling young players.

Celtic helped Frimpong develop, and now they’ll benefit again as he moves to one of the top clubs in England.
