Nottingham Forest player earns surprise international call-up for the first time since 2021

Nottingham Forest stars are receiving credit for their excellent season, with one star earning a recall to his international team for the first time in almost four years.

Forest were represented well in the Premier League’s end-of-season award nominations, with Morgan Gibbs-White up for Player of the Season alongside Chris Wood.

Nuno Espirito Santo has deservedly been nominated for the Manager of the Season award, but there was a surprise as Murillo missed out on a Young Player of the Season nod.

Anthony Elanga was at least representing the club in Murillo’s shock absence, but it’s a different accolade that one member of the Forest squad will be celebrating.

Nicolas Dominguez earns return to Argentina national squad

Not necessarily a starter every week, Nicolas Dominguez has impressed for Forest when called upon by Espirito Santo, so much so that his home nation has taken note.

Dominguez has earned a recall to the Argentina national team for their June World Cup qualifiers against Chile and Colombia, as they look to secure their place at the World Cup in 2026.

Remarkably, though, it’s not just an ordinary call-up for the Forest man as Dominguez hasn’t made the squad since November 2021, with his last appearance being a four-minute substitute cameo against Brazil.

In fact, he has never actually started a game for the star-studded nation, so hopefully Lionel Scaloni has seen his Premier League displays that have perhaps gone under the radar this season.

Nicolas Dominguez rarely lets Nottingham Forest down

Starting 21 games in the Premier League season, often alongside Elliot Anderson, Dominguez has shown an ability to add extra bite to the Reds’ midfield.

Statistic Nicolas Dominguez this season

Pass accuracy % 86.8%

Tackles per 90 3.88

Interceptions per 90 1.44

Blocks per 90 1.84

Dominguez is a perfect defensive midfielder

According to FBref, Dominguez’s 3.88 tackles per 90 put him in the top 1% of midfielders in Europe’s top five leagues, with his interceptions and blocks only serving to support this defensive output.

Dominguez hasn’t had a consistent run of games in the Premier League this season but has consistently performed when called upon, unlike players such as Danilo, who have struggled to find form.

He’s even found himself out on the right side of midfield on occasion, proving his worth as an exceptional utility player for the Forest manager.
