Aston Villa will not pursue 26-year-old Portuguese international Pedro Goncalves in the summer transfer window, with Sporting CP aiming to tie him to a new deal.
According to a report by A Bola, as relayed by Sport Witness, Pedro Goncalves is no longer the subject of interest from Aston Villa. The Villans have closely monitored the Sporting CP attacker for a long time. However, while the Primeira Liga giants aim to tie the Portuguese international to a new contract, the Villans have walked away from a possible move for the productive attacker.
Pedro Goncalves and his career so far
Pedro Goncalves has been among the most productive attackers in the world since joining Sporting CP from Famalicao in August 2020. The Chaves native spent his formative years in his homeland and had short stints in Spain and England. However, he rose in prominence during his spell with Famalicao.
The 26-year-old has come leaps and bounds during his spell with Sporting CP, filling the void left by Bruno Fernandes’s departure over half a decade ago. Pote has maintained his productivity levels this season despite struggling with injuries in the 2024/25 campaign.
The Portuguese international has contributed to 11 goals in 18 appearances in all competitions, finding the back of the net five times and providing six assists. Meanwhile, the Sporting CP attacker’s stock in the market has been high for a long time, with Aston Villa among his prospective suitors for the last few years.
Premier League move on the horizon?
Pedro Goncalves has been on Aston Villa’s radar for a long time. While Morgan Rogers has been exceptional for the West Midlands outfit, his long-term future is uncertain amid his emerging links with Premier League bigwigs. Even if the English international remains at Villa Park beyond the summer transfer window, Aston Villa should reinforce the offensive unit.
With Marcus Rashford and Marco Asensio increasingly unlikely to remain at Villa Park, the Villans need to replace the productive duo. So, Pote has been a viable target for Aston Villa. However, the West Midlands outfit will not pursue his signature in the summer transfer window.
Meanwhile, Sporting CP will aim to tie the 26-year-old Portuguese international to a new contract, improving his wages and increasing his release clause from €80 million. As for Aston Villa, it will be interesting to see who bolsters the Premier League club’s offensive department in the summer transfer window.
