Ashley Young set to break 19-year Premier League record after fresh Everton contract claim

Everton will be looking to keep on some of their experienced heads going into their stadium move.

David Moyes is set to approve a huge squad transformation on Merseyside in what will be a massive summer for the club.

Angus Kinnear says Everton’s summer to-do list is ‘unprecedented’ with players needed to cover numerous positions.

Everton could save themselves some of the work by keeping on select players who are set to run out of contract this summer.

Moyes has held Everton contract meetings at Finch Farm with decisions needing to be made over the coming days.

One of the players waiting on an answer from the Toffees is Ashley Young as his future on Merseyside hangs in the balance.

Ashley Young set for new Everton contract

It is believed Young is to be offered a new contract by Everton this summer in a recent update coming out of the club.

Although Everton will look to keep the right-back on, it is also suggested Joao Virginia and Asmir Begovic will depart the club as free agents.

If Young is to stay on at Everton, he has the potential to break a Premier League record that has now stood for 19 years.

At the age of 39, Young could become the oldest Premier League outfield player if he is to play a game in March of next year.

It would be some milestone for the former England international who is still playing for Everton under Moyes.

Begovic hailed Young earlier in the season as he continues to defy his age and perform at a high level for the Toffees.

With so much experience behind him, it would perhaps be somewhat of an own goal from Everton to let him go at such a big point in the club’s history.

Who holds Premier League record as the oldest outfield player

Former Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur striker Teddy Sheringham currently holds the record as the oldest outfield player.

There are a number of goalkeepers who have played well into their forties, but Sheringham holds the record for an outfielder since his final appearance in 2006.

At 40 years, 8 months, 28 days Sheringham’s record has stood for nearly 20 years, but is now coming under real threat.

Moyes has praised Young’s leadership on and off the pitch at Everton as he continues to use him off the bench.

Young may not be a starter under the 62-year-old, but he is certainly proving his worth to the squad ahead of the move to Bramley-Moore Dock.
