**Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola is still keen on recruiting Dani Olmo from Barcelona, according to journalist Christian Falk.**
The Spaniard was considered as a target in January when there were suggestions that Barca would be forced into letting him go on a free transfer due to registration problems. Olmo ended up staying at the Camp Nou but Falk says the Cityzens could reignite their interest this summer:
“We’ve heard Manchester City want Dani Olmo – it’s supposed to be a hot topic. He’s currently playing for Barcelona, but isn’t a regular under Hansi Flick. Pep Guardiola sees him as a good replacement for Kevin de Bruyne – and his move is a bit easier to realize.”
Many assumed that Bayer Leverkusen’s Florian Wirtz was the player that the club wanted to succeed De Bruyne but Falk claims City are aware they are not at the front of the queue for the German international’s signature:
“We also heard that City learned during the talks that Bayern are a bit further along with Wirtz. So: City is looking for Olmo. That would take THE player off the table.”
Why have City fallen behind in the race for Wirtz?
--------------------------------------------------
Bayern Munich appear to have the approval of the player so the chances of the 21-year-old making the switch to the Etihad Stadium look remote currently.
Liverpool have also complicated matters by holding talks with Wirtz and his entourage over the past week. A lot may still depend on who is willing to match Leverkusen’s €150m (£126m) price tag.
Olmo is not the only alternative under consideration
----------------------------------------------------
While Guardiola appears to be backing a move for Olmo, it should be pointed out that Director of Football Hugo Viana has also identified Nottingham Forest’s Morgan Gibbs-White as a target.
The England international has had a good season for the Tricky Trees, although he wouldn’t be the type of signing that fans are hoping for to replace De Bruyne.
