West Ham have endured a miserable season as they find themselves struggling in the bottom half of the Premier League table.

Graham Potter’s side started the latest round of fixtures in 17th place, but they moved up to 15th following their 2-0 victory over Manchester United on Sunday (11 May).

West Ham are set to be more than £24million down on their anticipated Premier League prize money for 2024-25, having finished ninth under David Moyes last season.

Finance expert Stefan Borson exclusively told Football Insider the Hammers have “lost their identity” this season after slipping down the table.

West Ham posted a record-breaking revenue last season after their turnover surged from £236.7million in 2022-23 to £269.8million.

However, their wage bill increased from £136.9million to £161million across the same period.

West Ham could face ‘hostile’ atmosphere

Borson insisted the atmosphere could become “hostile” at the London Stadium if West Ham’s performances don’t improve next season.

He told Football Insider: “It’s interesting because, if you look at the average attendance, it’s always amazing just how high they are because the stadium is so big and they are selling it out.

“There is great scale there. Obviously, they’ve had a disastrous season in the league, but they’re in that block of teams who have got some money. They are not scrimping around in terms of the wage bill, so they’re coming up to £160million to £200million.

“But the problem they’ve got is there is now this block below the big six, the Villa’s and Newcastle’s, who are showing a bit more ambition than West Ham.

“Ambition meaning spending more money, and they are just executing better in terms of actually where they’re putting the spend and what they’re seeing on the pitch.

“It puts them in a really sort of quite grim position right now because I think they’ve lost a bit of identity. They are not going to qualify for Europe this season. We may well have nine teams in Europe.

“Then you’ve got the three promoted teams next season and you’ve got eight others not in Europe, and they’re in the others. That’s not really the bunch that they want to be in.

“What they’ve got is a bit of an identity issue. They are neither competing nor are they in relegation trouble, and it’s just not a great place for them to be.

“You would think that it’s going to get quite hostile in the stadium if they’re there for an extended period.”
