Newcastle United are in a healthy financial position heading into this summer’s transfer window.

Newcastle have gone three consecutive transfer windows without making a major signing and instead have resorted to offloading players in order to comply with Premier League Profitability and Sustainability Rules (PSR).

The Magpies were forced to sell Elliot Anderson and Yankuba Minteh to Nottingham Forest and Brighton & Hove Albion, respectively, just hours before the PSR deadline on June 30. In January, further sales were sanctioned as Miguel Almiron re-joined Atlanta United while Lloyd Kelly moved to Juventus on loan with a £20million obligation to buy this summer.

Despite weakening the squad, Howe’s side have won the Carabao Cup - ending the club’s 56-year trophy drought - and now stand just one win away from securing Champions League qualification for the second time in three seasons.

The summer transfer window is a big opportunity to build on that success and Howe is confident the club will be in a position to finally strengthen his squad.

Speaking ahead of Sunday’s Premier League trip to Arsenal, Howe said: "Regular success, consistent success, all these things help you in the journey that you're on to show to everybody that that's where the club's ambition is.

"There's no doubt that's what the club's ambition is. But of course, as we've said many times, the ability financially to compete the last few years has been hampered by PSR, but those issues aren't there for the coming window. So I don't see any reason why we can't strengthen, not weaken ourselves."

Howe added: “I think we do have depth, it depends on the position, really, how much depth. If you look at our midfield, for example, when everyone's fit, I think we've got six top-quality midfielders for us to pick from - that's an area of real strength for us.

“Maybe in other positions we don't necessarily have that depth that you talk about, and it's that balance of the squad and also having adaptable players that can play different positions. They're so important because one player then can cover three positions, and that's so important.

“Maybe we need to look at certain areas of the squad, of course, with the players that we've lost through the last few transfer windows and just try to get that balance right going into next year."

What signings will Newcastle United make this summer?

Newcastle have already agreed their first summer incoming with 18-year-old Antonio Cordero set to join when his contract expires at La Liga 2 side Malaga next month.

In terms of immediate first-team signings, the Magpies have identified centre-back, right forward and goalkeeper as priority positions.
