While it was Michael Jordan that made the Air Jordan 4 “White Cement” famous when he sported the OG colourway in the 1989 NBA seasons, it was director Spike Lee who – for lack of a better word – cemented the iteration in sneaker (and cinematic!) history.
In Lee's 1989 “joint”, Do The Right Thing, Giancarlo Esposito's character “Buggin' Out” gets into a disagreement with a gentrifier of his New York neighbourhood (Bed-Stuy, Brooklyn) after the cyclist rolls his bike tire over one of Buggin's pristine “White Cement” fours. The mark left is a physical and symbolic violation, encapsulating the chief theme of the work. It's also a relatively early example of Esposito's prowess as a performer.
That very shoe is re-releasing next week for the first time since 2016.
The Jumpman team have been working hard to ensure it's as close to the 1989 release as possible.
