Newcastle United transfer target tight-lipped over future after St James' Park glimpse

Goalkeeper Gregor Kobel reacts after winning the UEFA Champions League match between Newcastle United FC and Borussia Dortmund at St. James Park

Borussia Dortmund goalkeeper Gregor Kobel is remaining tight-lipped over his future amid speculation he is wanted by top Premier League clubs. Newcastle United's interest has emerged in recent weeks but the Magpies got two glimpses of Kobel's talents in Champions League clashes with the German side in 2023.

The Daily Mail this week reported Toon scouts had kept a close eye on the Bundesliga stopper since then, while Chelsea and Manchester United have both been linked with moves for Kobel's services. The Swiss stopper is facing an uncertain future at Signal Iduna Park, with recent German reports contradicting each other over whether he will be Dortmund's No 1 next term.

"If I had to comment on every rumour, I would be talking all the time," Kobel said recently when asked about his future. "We are in an important phase. I want to focus 100% on my club, anything else would not be appropriate."

Newcastle will ramp up their goalkeeper search ahead of the summer ahead of what promises to be an exciting trading period, with Eddie Howe offering a positive PSR update in Friday morning's press conference. However, they will likely face competition for Kobel's signature.

Chelsea have reportedly been in contact with the 27-year-old in previous transfer windows but already house a large number of shot-stoppers at their Cobham base. However, Robert Sanchez has struggled this term and a change in between the sticks could be in the offing.

Manchester United have also been linked with a move for Kobel as Andre Onana faces scrutiny for this performances this term. The Dortmund stopper is under contract until 2028.

Meanwhile back on Tyneside, Howe has a big decision to make over his own goalkeeping options this summer. Nick Pope has fought to win his No 1 spot back following injury issues, while Martin Dubravka could leave in the coming months.

United have previously pursued James Trafford but Burnley's promotion to the top flight could scupper that deal.
