'I need him': David Moyes names the first Everton player to stay for next season

David Moyes has confirmed the first of his out-of-contract players to be sticking around at Everton.

Some big decisions need to be made at Everton over the coming days as players await decisions on their futures.

Moyes has been holding contract talks behind the scenes at Everton over recent weeks, but no announcements have been made.

There are a number of players who have already commented on their futures.

Abdoulaye Doucoure wants to stay at Everton, but the Mali midfielder has admitted he will not wait for an offer for much longer.

With just two games remaining in the 2024/25 campaign, Moyes has now announced one player is set to stay at the club.

David Moyes confirms Seamus Coleman will stay at Everton

It has been suggested Ashley Young will be handed a new Everton contract to keep him around for next season.

However, Asmir Begovic and Joao Virginia are set to depart the club in what will be a big change in the goalkeeping department.

Speaking to the media on Friday, Moyes has confirmed Seamus Coleman will remain with the club for next season.

“What I will say Sunday’s a game we are going to do everything we can to play the best we can,” Moyes said.

“But Seamus will stay next season. Without any doubt Seamus will be a part of the group.

“I need him here, his leadership, his message he has amongst the players in the dressing room. It would be wrong of me to let him go. So, one way or another Seamus will be here next season.”

It was not specified to what capacity Coleman would stick around with the defender potentially viewed in a coaching role.

But Moyes has previously suggested Coleman could become a coach due to the authority and respect he holds behind the scenes.

Coleman not ready for retirement

Earlier this week, the Republic of Ireland manager said Coleman is not retiring and this could be backed up by Moyes’ comments.

It would be a shock to see Coleman hang up his boots despite his difficult 2024/25 campaign through injury.

However, with Jake O’Brien nailing down the right-back spot at Everton, it is apparent Coleman’s role will be bigger off the pitch.

And as the club make the huge switch to Bramley-Moore Dock, he is expected to be a big voice in easing that transition to their new home.
