When it comes to making sensible, logical transfers, the current ownership and hierarchy at Newcastle has absolutely smashed it.
The likes of Bruno Guimaraes, Lewis Hall and Sven Botman have been nothing short of a masterstroke in buying world-class talent at an excellent price.
And if a recent report is to be believed, a former Man City star could be available for Newcastle United to sign on a free transfer this summer.
According to Foot Mercato, Newcastle United have been contacted over a potential free transfer move for Leroy Sane.
Sane, who turned 29 back in January, has just enjoyed yet another Bundesliga triumph with Bayern, but could be set to depart this summer as he stalls over a new contract with the German giants.
Sky Germany report that the former Man City winger has been offered terms worth €10m (£8.4m) per year, which equates to just over £160,000-per-week, along with potential bonuses worth over £4m on a deal until 2028.
His current contract is due to expire this summer and Foot Mercato’s Santi Aouna writes that Arsenal, Chelsea, Tottenham, Manchester United, Newcastle and Marseille have all been offered the German, should he become available on a ‘free.’
There is still a slim chance he remain in Munich, but all signs at the moment point towards Sane’s five year stint coming to an end, with Bayern demanding an answer soon on his future.
On the surface, a multi-time league champion with immense experience in European football seems like a no-brainer for us to look in our search for a quality new right winger.
He’s just delivered 13 goals and six assists over the 2024/25 season, can play down both flanks and has a brilliant left foot, but his wage demands as a free agent would be massive.
And for the sake of both squad harmony and abiding by PSR, Newcastle may have no interest in breaking our wage structure; even if Sane would arrive without a £50m-plus transfer fee.
Some may also question if Sane’s best years are behind him, meaning Howe may favour a younger, hungrier option who can grow with the club.
However, much like recent links to a Jack Grealish loan bid, Leroy Sane is supremely talented and proven at the highest level. If his wage demands weren’t astronomical, we might be tempted.
