Spurs' must increase urgency to trade assets quickly losing value

Buckle your seatbelts; it's time for the Spurs to go. There is no time to wait. The Spurs must put all of their chips on the table and push for a championship. In a league that has been full of parity, there is never a better time than now.

The Spurs were lucky enough to secure a franchise-changing and immediate All-NBA talent with Victor Wembanyama. Not only did they get their cornerstone piece, but they also got someone who can be the number one option on a championship-caliber team. And he's ready.

A perfect example of this is the Dallas Mavericks—before the disaster, of course. After seeing what Luka Doncic could become in his rookie season, they immediately turned their attention to getting Doncic the help he needed. They took some of their draft picks and a project player and got Kristaps Porzingis to be Doncic's Robin in his second year.

There is no longer a need to build through the draft or bank on developing young players; you have to invest in the now.

In the Spurs case, they have a treasure trove of assets, and most importantly, these assets are depreciating.

All eyes are on the Atlanta Hawks

---------------------------------

It starts with the Atlanta Hawks.  The Spurs hold the Hawks' first-round pick in three successive drafts, which will never be more valuable, which will never be more valuable. The Hawks just finished outside the playoffs, but there's no telling where they could be in the future. General manager Brian Wright needs to capitalize on this uncertainty.

In an increasingly weak Eastern Conference, the Hawks could surprise the league and finish towards the top of the group, leaving these draft picks in much worse condition. These picks are a ticking time bomb and must be reaped before it's too late.

On the flip side, the Spurs maintain internally controllable assets of their own, with a lucky draw at the second overall pick in this year's draft as well as their own first-round picks in 2028 and beyond.

It is easy to assume how these long-term picks will turn out. But before NBA teams can visually see the Spurs rise, these picks will still hold value.

Outside this path, the Spurs have held onto a band of expendable players. Like the Hawks' picks, there are questions regarding their future prospects. [Among this group are Devin Vassell, Keldon Johnson, and Malaki Branham.](https://airalamo.com/spurs-gut-wrenching-roster-moves-transform-true-contenders)

Each of these players has untapped potential, but there is no guarantee they will get there. With inconsistencies and a lack of championship-quality traits, the Spurs need to get the most for them before they end up riding the bench in a playoff series.

The stage is set in San Antonio

-------------------------------

With this massive asset pool, the Spurs have infinite options. But they cannot fear a swing for the fences. They need to go for a home run. The last hit to bring it all in.

[The Spurs have the assets for Giannis Antetokounmpo,](https://airalamo.com/spurs-lap-competition-giannis-sweepstakes-leaving-suitors-dust) but if he is not available, Wright and his team cannot shy away from looking elsewhere to upgrade. The Spurs must go star shopping and look down every road to see what is available.

The bottom line is that the Spurs don't have enough to compete right now, but they have all the assets to make the correct moves to get to that point. With Victor Wembanyama and De'Aaron Fox locked in, it is unequivocally important for them to use what they have in-house to strike while the iron remains hot.
