Over the years, countless players have come and gone through Manchester United.
Not just in the senior ranks but also throughout the academy setup.
While some have made it to the top and carved out successful first-team careers, many others have fallen short of expectations at Old Trafford.

Charlie Wellens falls into the latter category.
The versatile midfielder-turned-full-back was once a promising figure in United’s academy.
He played regularly for the Under-21s, even went out on loan to Oldham Athletic during the 2022/23 campaign.
Following his release by United in the summer of 2023, Wellens signed for Reading, linking up with former teammate Charlie Savage in League One.
At the time, the move was seen as a step up, with Wellens hoping to prove himself in a more competitive environment.

However, Reading have now confirmed via their official website that Charlie Wellens is among the players who will depart this summer upon the expiration of his contract.
Still only 22, Wellens now finds himself a free agent once more.
Less than just two years after leaving United.

His name was one of several on Reading’s released list, which also included experienced pros like Tom Carroll, Harlee Dean, and David Button.
Having made the jump from Manchester United’s academy to League One, Wellens will now be aiming to find another opportunity.
In aim to finally reignite a career that once showed real promise.
Wellens predominantly featured for United’s U18’s, back in 2019/20 season, where he played 22 games.
He was then part of the U23’s squad within the same season, although only made 1 appearance.
The Englishman’s best season at United came in 20/21, where he bagged six goal contributions in 18 games.
